How to upgrade your CCTV system with the SRV-EPX8 and Sensr.net

Imagine cape blowing in the wind

A lot of us have old closed circuit based camera systems that save data to a local hard drive and are looking to upgrade to a newer, internet based, system so they can view their cameras when they are away or still look at footage if the hard drive is stolen. If you fall into this category you may think all is lost and you will never get your old CCTV system hooked up to Sensr.net but never fear! The SRV-EXP8 video server is here to save the day! In this tutorial I will show you how to set up your SRV-EXP8 and how to start uploading to Sensr.net (if you don’t have an account it’s free to setup an account with Sensr.net. Camera monitoring starts at $9.95/month after your one week free trial is up.)

Step 1: Setup your  SRV-EXP8

The SRV-EXP8 allows you to hook up 8 CCTV cameras to it’s stand alone video server and connect to Sensr.net. First you can go ahead and plug SRV-EXP8 into both a power source and your router. Then plug all your CCTV cameras into the SRV-EXP8‘s video ports. Here they are labeled in this diagram:

Once you’ve done that you can skip installing their software onto your PC (they don’t include any software for mac OS X) as the SRV-EXP8 will automatically assign it’s self an IP address using DCHP. Go onto your router and find the server’s IP address by looking for the item with the MAC address starting with 00:30:F4 (if you aren’t sure how to access your router their is a nice guide in step two of this post).

Now that you have the SRV-EXP8‘s IP address you can go ahead and type it into your browse to get to the network access window and ask you for a user name and a password. The username is admin and the password is admin. You should change that. After providing the username and password you will get to a page which should look something like this:

Once you get to this page you have passed the hard part and we are on to…

Step two: add a new camera on Sensr.net

You are going to need to do each of your camera’s separately so if you have more than one camera just come back up to step two and repeat for each camera.

1. Simply log into your Sensr.net account click the Add Camera button. Sensr.net has a free one week trial, so give it a go and see if it works for you.  (It’s free to setup an account with Sensr.net. Camera monitoring starts at $9.95/month after your free trial is up.)  Once you login you’ll see a page like this:

2. Next you’ll see a page like this where you can set the timezone for your camera, give it a name, and tell us the model.  Cameras default to private but you can make them public if you want to share them with the world.

Note this is for a different device

3.

After that, we’ll generate some FTP credentials for your server. This generates a login for your  SRV-EXP8 to where it can upload images via FTP. This tells your camera where to upload the images. The important information here is:

  1. FTP Server
  2. FTP User name
  3. FTP Password

Save these so we can add them to your camera later.

Now that you’ve got all this information you are ready to move onto the third and final step.

Step three: point your server towards Sensr.net

All that is left to do is to give your server Sensr.net’s FTP information so it can start to upload your video. Go to the server’s network access page, which we accessed earlier, and click on the FTP tab. It should look something like this:

 SRV-EXP8's FTP page

SRV-EXP8’s FTP page

Copy and paste the three items from before, FTP Server, FTP User name, and FTP Password, onto this new page. Copy FTP sever onto the hostname section. We suggest uploading at one image per second so you can have real time live view so you can change the delay in the schedule section to 1. Leave everything else the same so your camera will upload 247.

Once you are done with that your server should start uploading to Sensr.net. Your page will go from this:

To this:

If you have more camera’s just click on the Cam 2 tab in the top right corner, than Cam 3, Cam 4 and so on. Repeat the add cam step on Sensr.net each time to get new FTP credentials for each Camera. The add camera tap looks like this:

And there you have it. You setup your SRV-EXP8 and brought your CCTV system to the future.  We’ll archive all the motion events, giving you 30 days of archives, SMS and email alerts, guest access, and a whole lot more.  You can view the live stream on our website or in our apps.  No firewall configuration is needed.  No PC in the basement required.

If you have any problems, send email to info @ sensr.net and we’ll try to help you out!
